Peter Watkins is an Emeritus Professor in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Birmingham. He has worked on many different experiments at CERN and was the head of the Birmingham Particle Physics group from 2001 to 2011.

He worked on a number of bubble chamber and early electronic experiments at the CERN SPS. His later experiments included the Nobel prize winning UA1 experiment, the OPAL experiment at LEP and the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. His contributions in these experiments included event visualisation, physics analysis, triggering and computing.

He has initiated many different Outreach activities for schools and teachers and was the UK representative on the International Particle Physics Outreach group for ten years. He particularly enjoys giving talks on Particle Physics and the LHC to non-specialist audiences.
