Reading List

These books vary widely in their level of treatment, some are more advanced than required for this course.

  • Reading list for course in main library - updated Jan. 2013.

General particle physics texts

  • Introduction to Elementary Particles, David Griffiths (Wiley-VCH, 2008, second edition revised, ISBN 978-3-527-40601-2)
  • Previous main textbook (for historical reasons) Nuclear and Particle Physics, W.S.C. Williams (OUP, 1991, updated 1997, ISBN 0-19-852046-8)
  • Introduction to high energy physics, D.H. Perkins, Addison-Wesley (2nd and 3rd ed.), Cambridge University Press (4th ed.). There are many copies of this book between 2nd and 4th edition in the library. Emphasis on 'historical' physics/methods.
  • Elementary Particle Physics in a Nutshell, Christopher G. Tully, Princeton University Press, ISBN 978-0-691-13116-0. New book, may be used intermittently in 2012_13 course.
  • The ideas of particle physics :an introduction for scientists (2nd Ed.), G.D. Coughlan and J.E. Dodd, Cambridge University Press, ISBN 0521385067(1991)
  • Quarks and Leptons: An Introductory Course in Modern Particle Physics, F. Halzen and A.D. Martin, Wiley and Sons, ISBN 0-471-88741-2 (1984). Difficult to get hold of and more advanced than required for our course.
  • Elements of Nuclear Physics, W.E. Burcham, Longman, ISBN 0-582-46027-1 (1985). There is a more recent book by Burcham and Jobes which may also be useful.
  • Nuclear and Particle Physics, B.R. Martin, Wiley, ISBN 0-470-02532-8 (2006).
  • Particle Physics, B.R. Martin and G. Shaw, Wiley, ISBN0-471-92359-1 (1992).
  • For students who have not attended Y1 "Quarks and Leptons", try reading the particle physics chapters from Quarks, Leptons and the Big Bang, J. Allday, (2nd edition, ISBN 0750308060)
