Notes for Year 2 Markers: 2011/12 Autumn Term

There are two core physics courses to be marked in the Autumn term:

  • Classical Mechanics/Relativity (Dr. A.T. Watson)
  • Quantum Mechanics (Dr. C.M. Hawkes)

and one course of equivalent length, divided into two parts:

  • first half of term: Nuclear Physics (Dr. C. Wheldon)
  • second half of term (students take one of two half-modules)
    • Neutrino Physics (Dr. E. Goudzovski), ~10 students
    • Electrons in Solids (Dr. Z. Li), ~100 students

The solutions to problem sheets will be submitted according to the timetable below * The final dates have still to be confirmed for 2011/12 session - to be updated by 28 Sep. 2011*

There are six of us involved in the marking of the assessed problems, as below:

Each of the courses has approximately the same numbers of students, therefore each marker marks a complete set of scripts. Provisionally, markers will be marking scripts 3 weeks in 4. If markers prefer to mark questions from subjects different from those above, please arrange with Dogus (also tell me for information).

Similarly, if you are not able to mark in a particular week, e.g. because you are travelling for your research work, please arrange to swap your marking with someone else. If you do this it is important to tell Dogus and me so that solutions do get marked by the Monday deadline.

Marking Instructions

The schedule for marking scripts is as follows:

  • Students will submit their first set of solutions by Wednesday 12 October, 11.00. These are placed in the appropriate box outside the Second Year Laboratory.
    • Any students submitting their solutions after this time should do so to the Teaching Support Office, where the time/date of submission will be recorded before the scripts are forwarded to the collator.

  • The collator will
    • Collect the scripts directly from the box outside the Second Year Laboratory (please obtain a key from the Teaching Support Office)
    • Distribute the scripts and solutions to the markers on Wednesday afternoon each week.
    • Ensure that markers have a spreadsheet into which students' marks will be entered. You should be sent a copy of the spreadsheet by the Teaching Support Office or by Dr. Nicola Wilkin (Head of Second Year).

  • Markers must return scripts to the collator by start of Monday morning of the following week, together with the spreadsheet of marks.

  • The collator returns the marked scripts to tutors by Monday evening, diverting the solutions from a different tutor group each week to the moderator. The moderator should receive these scripts as soon as possible on Monday to allow them to be remarked and returned to tutors also on Monday.

  • The collator should merge the marks from the markers into a single spreadsheet and email a copy of the spreadsheet to the Teaching Support Office, the Head of Year 2 and me.

  • The tutors pass them on to the students.

  • The moderator will cross check a sample of the marking each week, and return these to the collator who will pass them on to the appropriate tutor.

  • Future sets will be distributed each Wednesday for return the following Wednesday at 11.00.

Guidance on how to mark will be distributed separately, as discussed during the initial meeting.

  • There will be a marking training session in room Nuffield G19,1400-1530 on Wednesday 26 October to discuss how things are going and try a few exercises.

"Good luck" and please do get in touch with me if you have questions or problems, in particular in the first few weeks.

Nigel
