Kernel Updates

A sketch of how Birmingham has dealt with the Kernel Security incident. Based on this article, it looks like kernel-2.6.9-89.0.9 contains the relevant fixes.

WN test

Tested update on epgd01. uname -a returns a kernel version of 2.6.9-78.0.13.ELsmp.

Test plan:

Step ExpectationSorted ascending Result
Submit test job ATLAS job should complete sucessfully. Confirmed smile
Update kernel using yum kernel-2.6.9-89.0.9.EL.i686 should be installed. Confirmed smile
Reboot Should come back up using new kernel. Confirmed smile

Reboot was initially unsuccessful for epgd01. Updated kernel did not appear in the grub menu, and returning to 2.6.9-78.0.13 caused a kernel panic as / fs label had changed. This was fixed by guess work - edited grub menu entry for kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.9-78.0.13.EL ro root=LABEL=/1, replacing LABEL=/1 with LABEL=/. This at least allowed the system to boot.

Grub entries were missing for kernel-2.6.9-89.0.9, so they were added manually. Reboot appeared to work.

Full Deployment

Rolled out to all Grid resources. epgd06 did not reboot. epgse1 and sr1 booted into the old version. Fixed by another reboot (manual in the case of epgd06).
