ANITA: Hunting for Ultra-High Energy Neutrinos in Antarctica

Ryan Nichol (UCL)

Ultra-high energy neutrino astronomy is a rapidly emerging field at the crossroads of particle physics, astronomy and astrophysics. This talk will outline the motivation for ultra-high energy neutrino astronomy and discus possible detection mechanisms. The ANITA project will be described. Initial results, from the 35 day maiden balloon flight of ANITA-I in 2006/7, will be presented. The prospects of ANITA-II, which flew in 2008/9, and future related experiments will be discussed.
