Spin correlation in the dileptonic decay of top quark pairs at ATLAS

Simon Head (Birmingham)

Abstract

The lifetime of the top quark is about 20 times shorter than the timescale for strong interactions, implying that the top quark decays before there is time for its spin to be depolarised. Top quark pairs produced by the strong interaction are unpolarised but have correlated spins. A measurement of this correlation would provide a precision test of the Standard Model. This seminar discusses the techniques for a future measurement of the spin correlation by considering a Monte Carlo study representing the first 200 pb-1 of data at 10 TeV.
