Gauge Theories from the 11th Dimension

Neil Lambert (King's College, London)

Abstract

String Theory and M-theory provide a playground to try to understand all of Physics in a single unified framework. To date there are no clear observational predictions of theory. However at a more formal level String Theory and M-theory make concrete predictions about the existence and properties of Quantum Field theories. Some of these are quite surprising from a traditional field theory approach and tell us that there us is more to quantum field theory than our current techniques can account for. This talk aims to describe how eleven-dimensional M-theory predicts certain strongly coupled field theories in 3 and 6 dimensions.
