Novel Silicon Tracker Technologies for the HL-LHC and beyond

Laura Gonella (Birmingham University)

Highly segmented silicon detectors are the technology of choice for vertex and tracking detectors at collider experiments. They detect the passage of ionizing radiation with good spatial resolution and efficiency in the harsh experimental conditions close to the interaction point. Different types of silicon detectors exists to satisfy a range of requirements in terms of spatial resolution, radiation hardness, data rate, area, material budget, etc. at different facilities. This seminar will present examples of state-of-the-art silicon detector systems and explain the challenges for the development of these detectors to instrument future experimental facilities at the HL-LHC and beyond. In particular, the seminar will focus on fast timing detectors, that will be key to efficient tracking in high pile up environments, and CMOS sensors that are considered the breakthrough technology for future tracking detectors.
