Turning the screws on the Standard Model: theory predictions for the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon

Christine Davies (Glasgow University)

Abstract

The Muon g-2 experiment (E989) at Fermilab is set to give us the first results in summer 2019 from the improved determination of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. The aim, with the final statistics, is to resolve the current tantalising 3-4 sigma discrepancy between existing experiment and Standard Model expectations. Along with the improvement in the experimental uncertainties, the race is one to improve the theoretical uncertainties from the Standard Model. Lattice QCD has a key role to play here in providing an 'ab initio' value for the important hadronic vacuum polarisation contribution. I will give a general background to the theoretical inputs to the SM determination of a_mu and then focus on recent lattice QCD results in this area, and prospects for further improvement.
