General Notes

Please note: there are other printing services you can use on campus. See the IS Printing web page. Information Services charge 30 pence per side of paper and (last time I asked) 80 pence per transparency.

Phaser 850 The Particle Physics Group's Tektronix Phaser 850DP and Xerox 8550 colour printers can print on A4 paper, single or double sided, and on A4 transparencies: it has paper and transparency trays and duplex facility built-in.

It is often available to research and admin staff and graduates, on an informal basis, at a charge which covers the incremental costs of solid ink and media, plus a small contribution to maintenance. Costs are recovered via group accounts, not cash.

There is now a minimum order charge. A supplies price increase is now being passed on. Print charges are currently as follows.

Ink Coverage Cost per side of paper Cost per transparency
Monochrome 20 pence 40 pence
1-33% colour 30 pence 50 pence
34-66% colour 40 pence 60 pence
67-100% colour 50 pence 70 pence
Per file Minimum per-file order charge 3.00 pounds

Print output can generally be picked up within half a day to a day of submission, though this may vary, particularly when I'm on holiday! If it's urgent, ring L.S.Lowe on 44621 first. Don't assume that I've noticed the request or even that I'm here to notice it.

Output has a semi-glossy ink finish which gives a professional look. Paper output quality is generally excellent and transparency quality is extremely good. Ink adhesion on transparencies is lower than on paper, but this is not a problem in normal use.

Files need to be in PostScript format for this printer.

Built-in PostScript Font notes

We have a list of the standard 35 PostScript Fonts which are built into all PostScript printers, and a list of PostScript Fonts which are built into Tektronix 850DP ROM. These fonts therefore do not need to be downloaded by your printer software in order to be used.

Driver Notes

To prepare for printing in Colour PostScript format on the first occasion on a Windows system, from applications like Word or PowerPoint which rely on separate printer drivers, you will need to get a Colour PostScript printer driver set up for you: please read the Setup Notes in this separate section.

If your PostScript file(s) are created by a Unix/Linux application, or by dvips on any operating system, then you can already produce generic Colour PostScript files and need take no further action.
