A cosmic ray enters the spark chamber through the scintillator. This causes a photon (shown in green) to be emitted, which is detected by the phototube. This then converts this light signal into an analogue electrical signal (shown in red). This signal is then passed into a discriminator where the analogue signal is converted into a digital one (pink).
