The National Particle Physics Masterclass
at the University of Birmingham
Wednesday 22nd April 2009
|
A Masterclass reviewing and illustrating some of the latest developments in particle physics research will be held at the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Birmingham, on the above date. It will be part of a national series of masterclasses, supported by the Institute of Physics.
Groups of sixth formers studying physics are invited to come along with their teachers to experience for themselves the excitement of the latest results.
Activities anticipated this year are as follows:
- Recognising W pair events. The Large Electron Positron collider at CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, was the largest collider in the world until its closure at the end of 2000. In the final years of operation it made large numbers of events with pairs of W particles. The students learn how to recognise W pair events in a sample of more common events.
- An introduction to the ALICE and ATLAS experiments (to begin at CERN in 2008), including the physics that will be studied, the detectors that will be used and the LHC accelerator.
We also have links to further particle physics web resources relevant to the Masterclass topics and Masterclass 2008 presentations.
The National Particle Physics Masterclass gives sixth form students the opportunity to relate their classes to fundamental research.
